48 years ago on this date (May 9, 1968), the late, great Merle Haggard went into the studio to record one of his signature songs,  'Mama Tried'. Haggard recorded the song with Glen Campbell assisting on guitar.

In 1999, the song won the Grammy Hall of Fame award. And just a few weeks ago on March 23rd, the song was selected by the National Recording Registry for preservation for its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance". The honor was placed on the song just two weeks before Haggard's death.

The song was released in July of 1968 and became Haggard's 5th number one song at the time, spending 4 weeks a top the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
