64 years ago today on August 23, 1952, Kitty Wells scored the very first number one country hit for a woman.

Wells made history with the song 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honk Tonk Angels'.  The song was recorded in response to Hank Thompson's song 'The Wild Side of Life', which included the lyric "I didn't know God made honky tonk angels".

Wells' number one hit would later pave the way for future female country stars like Lorretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.
