Trumpet & Percussion Ensembles Concert

Angelo State University’s Trumpet Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble will present a special joint concert on Monday, April 24, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Titled “Trumpet and Drum – Then and Now,” the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is open free to the public. Musical selections will feature trumpet and drum combinations, jazz favorites by the Trumpet Ensemble accompanied by a rhythm section, historic works from the 20th century by the Percussion Ensemble, and hot Latin music by the joint ensembles.

The trumpet and timpani combination “March for the Ark” by C.P.E. Bach will open the concert, followed by music for timpani by Jacques and Andrew Philidor and Bach’s “March for Two Pairs of Kettle Drums.”

The Trumpet Ensemble, accompanied by piano, bass and drums, will perform a variety of jazz selections, including the popular “St. Louis Blues” and music written by prominent trumpeter Shorty Rogers. The Percussion Ensemble will perform “Trio Per Uno” by Nebjosa J. Zivkovic.

The two ensembles will then join together to close the concert with two Latin music selections.

The Trumpet Ensemble is directed by Dr. John Irish, professor of music. The Percussion Ensemble is directed by Trent Shuey, assistant director of bands. More details on the ensembles are available at www.angelo.edu/dept/arts/music/ensembles.php.

‘Give More HUGS’ Book Signing

Angelo State University will host a Give More HUGS Book Signing event on Monday, April 24, from noon to 3 p.m. in the northwest corner on the first floor of the Porter Henderson Library, 2025 S. Johnson St.

The Give More HUGS (Helping Unite Giving Souls) nonprofit organization collects donated children’s books to be given to Title 1 schools in San Angelo and surrounding communities that have large low-income student populations. The ASU campus community and the public are invited to help sign and write messages and quotes inside the book covers to encourage the young readers. Donations of new or used children’s books will also be accepted.

ASU alum Christopher McGilvery is the founder and executive director of Give More HUGS. He will be on hand for the book signing, along with representatives of the Porter Henderson Library, San Angelo Police Department, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and the Teacher Store, as well as students in ASU’s chapters of the Alpha Chi and Phi Kappa Phi national honor societies.

The book drive and ASU signing event are part of the Give More HUGS BookShare program that helps provide books to low-income students in Texas, New York, Connecticut, Dominica and the Dominican Republic.

Angelo State University’s Freshman College will host a celebration to honor 104 local high school seniors set to graduate in May through ASU’s Up & Coming Scholars Program on Monday, April 24, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The invitation-only celebration will begin at 6 p.m. for the graduating seniors and their families. Each of the students will be presented an honor cord and a certificate during the event, which will also be attended by their high school principals and/or administrators and ASU President Brian J.
