The Angelo State University men’s and women’s basketball squads are teaming with Goodfellow Air Force Base volunteers and other ASU sports programs and student groups to freshen up Kirby Community Park on Saturday.
Some 200 volunteers will be repainting stripes on the park’s basketball courts and hockey rink, resurfacing the playground, painting a fence and picking up trash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the park at 1401 Edmund Blvd.

Organizer Sanford Mouton, an ASU graduate student, plans to use the effort as a launching pad to recruit local middle school and high school students to participate in other community service projects through his organization, Youth Achieving through Service and Sports, or YASS. YASS’ vision, Mouton says, is to deliver a “brand of excellence that promotes success and develops effective support systems for young people,” all while serving the community in which they live.

“We are always appreciative of community volunteers who want to contribute to our parks system,” said Carl White, the City’s Parks and Recreation Director. “Kirby is one of our most popular parks, so we know the folks who frequent it will appreciate the efforts, as well. We’re hopeful this is the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Mr. Mouton and his charges.”
