Big Lake Police Officer Shot and Killed

A Big Lake Sheriff's Deputy has been shot and killed this afternoon in an on going stand off in Big Lake.

According to a DPS press release around 6pm law enforcement officials were in search of a suspect in Big Lake Texas suspected of shooting a law enforcement officer. Officials say the suspect has barricaded himself inside a residence near the 1100 block of Main St. in Big Lake. Law enforcement is hoping for a peaceful ending and encourages the public to stay away from that area of town.

The Big Lake Wildcat is reporting that the officer shot was Sheriff's Deputy Josh Mitchell who was taken to Regan County Memorial Hospital where he later died  from his wounds. At this time those displaced by the events in the community are encouraged to go to the First Baptist Church of Big Lake who have graciously opened their doors until the stand off comes to an end.
