The San Angelo-Tom Green County Health Department will be assisting state health officials in two free local clinics this week to test for sexually transmitted diseases.
Sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the community outreach activities will provide free and confidential testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. Each day of public testing will occur at the Salvation Army Red Shield Lodge, 122 W. 2nd St. Testing days are:

  • Wednesday, July 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 4 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, July 19, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Health Department offices at 2030 Pulliam St. will be closed on those days – along with Thursday, July 18, when STD testing will be conducted on Tom Green County Jail inmates – as local personnel assist state health officials.

No physical exam will be required to be tested. Instead, a small blood and urine sample will be collected. The specimens will be conducted for testing only the four STD’s listed above. The testers will also provide pamphlets for HIV and STD’s, information on adult vaccines, and free condoms.

According to the DSHS, one in five people with HIV is unaware he or she is infected.
