San Angelo Street Repaving Project Continues Monday, Oct. 7th

Four San Angelo streets will be repaved during a street reconstruction project that begins Monday, Oct. 7.
The streets involved are:

• Main Street from the Houston Harte Expressway to 18th Street.
• 14th Street from Main to Chadbourne streets.
• Oakes Street from 14th to 11th streets.
• 19th Street from U.S. Highway 87 west to the railroad tracks.

The $1.3 million mill and overlay project, which will be performed by Reece Albert, a local contractor, is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month. During construction, the streets will not be closed, but traffic may be reduced to one lane with flaggers controlling the flow of traffic. Drivers may encounter delays during the project and are urged to use caution in the construction zones.

Mill and overlay involves grinding and removing the top 2 inches of asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt to improve and extend the life of the roadway’s surface; doing so also yields a smoother ride.

Last month, the City completed an effort to sealcoat designated streets throughout the community. Sealcoating is a preventative measure that involves applying a thin layer of asphalt and rock to a street’s surface to prevent moisture from seeping into the asphalt and damaging the roadway’s base. The process extends the life of a street’s surface.

The $1.7 million contract to perform the project represented a near-tripling of the $600,000 the City spent on sealcoating last year.

The streets involved in the maintenance program were determined following an analysis and prioritization of street conditions by the Engineering Services and Street & Bridge divisions with the assistance of a construction testing company that sampled and tested roadbeds.
