That's what a survey of people in Britain shows. taxi-summoning app Hailo asked phone owners to list their top reasons for using the gadgets with texting messages and receiving messages coming in first and second.

Number three on the list was reading personal email while the fourth most popular function was surfing the Internet.

And making calls? Nope, not yet. That was sixth behind setting up the phone to act as an alarm clock.

Rounding out the top ten: sending personal emails; checking the time; using the calculator; and checking Facebook.
