It was Sept. 1, 1979, thirty seven years ago that Willie Nelson and Leon Russell  recorded a Number 1 remake of the Elvis Presley classic “Heartbreak Hotel”.

Nelson and Russell’s version was on their collaborative album, 'One for the Road', which went gold within two months of its release. It was Nelson’s seventh time to the top of the charts but their recording of “Heartbreak Hotel” was Russell’s only country chart-topping hit.
“Heartbreak Hotel” was also Presley’s first No.1 single. Other artists who have recorded it include Paul McCartney, the Quarrymen, Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake,  Cher,  Merle Haggard, Jimi Hendrix, and a few others.

Nelson and Russell’s version is available for download on iTunes.
