Abilene’s American Legion Post 57 Redefines Dining Excellence
I've visited the American Legion Parramore Post 57 in Abilene at least a hundred times in the last 30 years, and I love the feel and vibe I get there. As the American Legion states in their intro: "We are proud supporters of our Military and their families. We are a private post but we are open to the public for many exciting and fun things."
While there on a Saturday for their weekly feeding, I had a meal like no other. It was delicious. My brother-in-law Trey invited me to join him and his family for a chicken fried steak dinner complete with all the trimmings.
What I was NOT expecting was how HUGE the dinner was going to be. In Texas, we always claim to be the biggest and best at everything. While there are other restaurants in Texas that claim to have the "biggest chicken fried steak", I think this was it. I've lived in Texas for 50 years and had never experienced a steak this size.
The meal was excellent and came with everything you might ever desire with chicken fried steak. Along the meal, veterans shared stories and thanked those who came out to support the Legion. I now know why they meet every Saturday to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy.
On the first, second, and third Saturday of every month, the American Legion serves dinner (or "Saturday Supper" as I call it). The first Saturday is a "Fish Fry" consisting of fish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and fries. The second Saturday is a "Chicken Fried Steak" with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, and a yeast roll. The third Saturday is a "Taco Dinner" with soft or crispy tacos, beans, and rice.
They also provide a variety of desserts. Hope to see you there.
