Lately, every time I turn on the television and the news comes on they're always talking about sex offenders being arrested or local law enforcement looking for a particular sex offender. While it does sound like there are more sex offenses being committed, the numbers from 2021 as compared to 2022 have actually gone down, although not by much.

Speaking of the numbers, there was a total of 780,000 in 2021 compared to only 767,000 in 2022 which is a drop of approximately 2% in the 12 months. While the numbers have been tabulated since 2019 it appears that COVID may have affected the spike up until 2021 in that many were not going to work or staying home.

Nonetheless, Texas has the largest number of registered sex offenders with nearly 100,000, followed by California in second place with nearly 60,000, and New York in 3rd place with over 42,000. Please understand that Texas, California, and New York are the three largest states by population only. Thus it stands to reason why the number of sex offenders is so high in those three states.

The Lone Star State has had the Texas Sex Offender Registration Program for quite some time which allows Texans to find out where registered sex offenders live complete with addresses and the crime they committed. Furthermore, the Texas Sex Offender Registration Program allows one to see how many sex offenders are living in your city, your county, and the state.

The Texas Sex Offender Registration Program (Chapter 62 of the Code of Criminal Procedure) is a sex offender registration and public notification law designed to protect the public from sex offenders. This law requires adult and juvenile sex offenders to register with the local law enforcement authority of the city they reside in or, if the sex offender does not reside in a city, with the local law enforcement authority of the county they reside in.
