Happy Birthday to U.S. Marines From Texas: We Will Never Forget!
Honoring the United States Marine Corps: Defenders of Freedom, Guardians of Texas
Every November 10th, we celebrate the birth of the United States Marine Corps, a symbol of strength, resilience, and loyalty since 1775. As Texas joins the nation in honoring the Corps’ 249 years of service, it’s worth remembering how the Marines not only safeguarded American interests globally but also played a key role in defending the Lone Star State.
A Legacy Born in Revolution
The Marine Corps traces its origins back to the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, when two battalions were established for service at sea and on land. In their first mission, the Marines launched an amphibious raid on the Bahamas, marking the beginning of their storied legacy. Disbanded after the Revolution, they were re-established in 1798, setting the stage for future missions worldwide.
Protecting Texas in the 1800s
The Marines’ role extended beyond borders to protect American interests at home, particularly in Texas. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Marines defended the Gulf Coast and joined General Winfield Scott’s forces in Mexico, capturing key locations, including the “Halls of Montezuma” in Mexico City. Many Texans see the Marines as historic protectors of the state, cementing a bond of respect and admiration.
Global Battles and Lasting Valor
In the War of 1812, the Marines defended Washington, D.C., and aided Andrew Jackson’s forces in New Orleans. Through the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and actions across the Caribbean and Asia, the Corps demonstrated its resilience, growing into a global fighting force renowned for courage and commitment.
Celebrating 249 Years of Service
This November, we honor a legacy that began with the Revolutionary War and continues as a force for freedom. Joining the Marines means stepping into a role that combines history, honor, and heroism. Celebrating the Marine Corps birthday lets us recognize the men and women who protect America, especially Texas, with loyalty and valor. As Texans, we proudly salute the Marines who have long defended our state and nation.
