How Your Phone Can Boost Safety In Texas Neighborhoods
Most Texans carry a powerful safety tool in their pocket every day, but many people don’t even realize it exists.
It’s called the iWatchTexas app, and Texas law enforcement officials say it’s one of the easiest ways citizens can help protect their communities.
The free app allows Texans to report suspicious activity that may not require an immediate emergency response but still deserves law enforcement attention.
When Something Just Doesn’t Feel Right
During a recent interview, Sergeant Marc Couch explained that the iWatchTexas system is meant for those moments when something simply doesn’t seem right.
“If you see something that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, or something doesn’t look right, that’s when you use the iWatchTexas app,” Couch said.
The system allows people to report suspicious activity such as possible drug manufacturing, abuse concerns, unusual chemical storage, or other behavior that appears out of place.
Reports can even be submitted anonymously, which encourages people to share information they might otherwise hesitate to report.
Reports Reach Local Law Enforcement
Once a tip is submitted, it doesn’t just disappear into a computer system.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, each report is reviewed by trained analysts and then shared with the appropriate agencies, including local police departments and county sheriff’s offices when necessary.
Officials say most reports take less than five minutes to submit.
New Feature Targets Foreign Influence Threats
Governor Greg Abbott recently directed DPS to add a new feature allowing Texans to report harassment or intimidation from hostile foreign governments.
The update allows users to indicate if suspicious activity may involve foreign influence, including intimidation, digital threats, harassment, or other forms of pressure from foreign adversaries.
Those reports are automatically routed to DPS for additional review.
Remember: Emergencies Still Require 911
Officials stress that the iWatchTexas app is not intended for emergencies.
If someone is in immediate danger, Texans should always call 911 first.
But when something simply seems suspicious, the iWatchTexas app offers a quick and confidential way to report it.
And according to law enforcement, the message for Texans is simple.
If you see something, say something.
