If you’re staying in the Big Country or anywhere across West Texas this year, here are seven easy and great getaway places that won’t destroy your wallet, and might just become a new family tradition.

1. Abilene State Park

Simple. Close. Affordable.

Sometimes Spring Break doesn’t need to be complicated. A campsite, a fishing pole, and a campfire can beat any expensive trip.

2. San Angelo State Park

Buffalo. Longhorns. Lake views. Wide-open Texas sky.

This park feels like stepping into a postcard. Pack a picnic, bring the fishing poles, or stay overnight so the kids can experience real West Texas outdoors.

3. Palo Duro Canyon

The second-largest canyon in America is in Texas.

If your family hasn’t stood on the rim at sunrise, you’re missing something special. Hiking, biking, camping, it’s Spring Break done right.

4. Monahans Sandhills State Park

Sand surfing in West Texas? Yes, it’s real.

Rent sand disks and let the kids run wild. It feels like the beach, minus the sharks and hotel prices.

5. Fort Griffin State Historic Site

History meets open range. Explore the old frontier fort and see official Texas Longhorns roaming nearby. It’s a great mix of education and adventure.

Waterfalls in Texas surprise a lot of people. Gorman Falls alone makes the drive worth it. It’s rugged, scenic, and unforgettable.

If you haven’t been lately, it’s time. The giraffes, the new exhibits, the safari train, it’s an easy half-day or full-day adventure right here at home. Kids love it. Adults secretly love it more.

Spring Break in West Texas Hits Different

You don’t have to leave Texas to make memories. Some of my favorite childhood adventures were right here in the Big Country, dusty shoes, sunburned noses, and stories that still get told today.

Before you book a flight somewhere packed with tourists, consider loading up the truck, grabbing some snacks, and heading out on a West Texas road trip instead.

Spring Break is about time together. And we’ve got plenty of wide-open Texas to explore
