Texas Lottery Luck: Why I Wish My Name Was Maria
I’ll go ahead and admit it right up front: I play the lottery. Every Monday. Every Wednesday. Every Saturday night. Not obsessively, not irresponsibly, just enough to keep the dream alive. And no, before you ask, the most I’ve ever won is about twenty bucks. But hey, if you don’t play, you can’t win, right?

That’s why an email that landed in my inbox recently stopped me dead in my tracks, especially when I saw which name is apparently the luckiest in Texas.
Texas Has a “Luckiest Name,” and It’s Not Rudy
According to a new study shared with me, the name Maria shows up more than any other name among recent Texas lottery jackpot winners. And I’m not going to lie, when I read that, I laughed, sighed, and immediately thought, well, that figures.
Apparently, Maria has been associated with more winning tickets than randomness alone would explain. And while I know luck doesn’t actually work this way, it’s still fascinating. I mean, how many Marias do you personally know here in Texas? Quite a few, I bet.
According to BetUS.com, the luckiest names that win in the lottery in Texas are:
- Maria
- John
- Jose
What the Study Looked At (In Plain English)
The data comes from a review of publicly available lottery winner records, focusing on the most recent winners where names were shared. The goal wasn’t to predict future winners but to see whether certain names appeared more often than expected.
It’s not magic. It’s not destiny. But it is an interesting pattern, and Texans love patterns, stats, and good conversation starters.
Why I Still Play (And Always Will)
Do I actually believe my name is holding me back from winning the Texas Lottery or Powerball? Of course not. But I do believe in hope. I believe in dreaming big. And I believe that if I ever did hit it big, the money wouldn’t just sit in a bank account.
I’ve said it on the radio before, and I’ll say it again: if I ever win big, I want it to make our community better, help people, support causes, and give back in a meaningful way.
Texas, We’ve Never Had That Winner… Yet
One thing that still makes me curious is why Texas hasn’t had one of those jaw-dropping, headline-making jumbo wins. Maybe it’s coming. Maybe it’s already sitting in someone’s glove box right now.
And who knows, maybe it is Maria. Or maybe, just maybe, one of these Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday nights, it’ll finally be Rudy.
Until then, I’ll keep playing responsibly, keep dreaming big, and keep loving the conversations that make Texas, well, Texas.
