As with many of us, I'm saddened by the passing of Tina Turner. I've been playing her music on the radio for decades. Yesterday I learned something completely new about her. She had some deep ties to a hotel right here in Texas.

As the story goes in 1974 while on tour and looking for a place to stay in Dallas, Tina Turner encountered the Lorenzo Hotel. Located downtown, it was known for being one of the few hotels at the time that welcomed African-American guests. There was still racial segregation going on, especially in the southern states.

The Lorenzo Hotel became a refuge for Tina Turner during her stay in Dallas. It was a safe and welcoming place where she could relax and recharge from the pressure of her personal and professional life.

During her time at the Lorenzo Hotel, Tina Turner continued to work on her solo career, performing at various venues in Dallas. Her determination was set to establish herself as a successful solo artist and break away from her troubled past with Ike. In the years that followed, she did exactly that.
