As with many of us, I'm saddened by the passing of Tina Turner. I've been playing her music on the radio for decades. Yesterday I learned something completely new about her. She had some deep ties to a hotel right here in Texas.
Tina Turner and the Lorenzo Hotel in Dallas have an interesting connection that dates back to the 1970s. At the time, Tina Turner found herself in an abusive and tumultuous relationship with her husband and musical partner, Ike Turner. She decided to leave him and pursue a solo career, which marked a turning point in her life.
As the story goes in 1974 while on tour and looking for a place to stay in Dallas, Tina Turner encountered the Lorenzo Hotel. Located downtown, it was known for being one of the few hotels at the time that welcomed African-American guests. There was still racial segregation going on, especially in the southern states.
The Lorenzo Hotel became a refuge for Tina Turner during her stay in Dallas. It was a safe and welcoming place where she could relax and recharge from the pressure of her personal and professional life.
