It's not easy being a rescuer, or so one police officer with The Colony Police Department found out not too long ago.

In the early hours of July 19, a car exiting the Sam Rayburn toll road "hit a barricade, flipped, and was wedged between walls separating northbound and southbound traffic" as reported by WFAA.

The car then promptly burst into flames.

Police arrived on the scene and were informed by witnesses that the driver was still inside the engulfed vehicle. Without delay, a rookie officer dashed towards the car with a fire extinguisher at full blast.

Unfortunately for the rookie, the flames promptly rekindled each time it was put out. Then, he realized he was dealing with a Tesla.

“I noticed it was a Tesla, but I did not take into account right then and there that this was a battery, an electric vehicle,” the 19-month rookie, Officer Edwardo Hernandez, told WFAA.

Again, without delay, the officer snatched up a tool designed to breach every door and window known to mankind and smashed out the window of the Tesla.

The released bodycam footage shows the following introductions:

Ofc Hernandez: “Your car is on fire, get out.”

Driver: “I’m OK”

Ofc Hernandez: “Get out of the car!”

The officer is seen plunging his hands into the windowless window and getting a firm grasp on the dazed driver and yanking him to safety (whether it be of his own free-will or not).

The driver was injured, but very much alive. The Tesla reportedly burned to its frame. As for the rookie Officer Hernandez, he likely earned his stripes that night.
