Should We Worry ? Houston Sets Drills for Nuclear “Event”
It is a known fact that every weapon invented by man has eventually been used in war. This includes nuclear weapons.
For 78 years, the world has lived under the shadow of nuclear war. The Doomsday Clock now reads 90 seconds til midnight. This is the closest to a global catastrophe than it has ever been.
That means the danger is even more real than during the height of The Cold War before the fall of the Soviet Union when nuclear drills were conducted in every school in America.
In those days, signs for Fallout Shelters were all over major cities in the US, including the cities of West Texas. Americans were on high alert for the possibility of nuclear war. Instead of fighting cultural battles over beer and drag queens, Americans were united in their fear of a common enemy, an enemy bent on our total annihilation.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was a collective sigh of relief worldwide. Together, the nations worldwide passed treaties to limit the production and deployment of nuclear weapons, and stockpiles of the weapons were reduced. Better communications systems were implemented to make nuclear missiles less likely to be launched by mistake.
Now, all that optimism seems to be out the window; with the war in Ukraine, North Korea, and other rogue nations now possessing dangerous stockpiles of nukes and the overall climate of distrust and fear, the world seems closer than ever to complete disaster.
Against the backdrop of all that, the FBI in Houston takes to social media to drop this on us this weekend.
The FBI has made a point to tell everyone not to panic. There will be no danger in the drills to the public. Unfortunately, almost no one trusts our government anymore. Conspiracy theorists are already hard at work trolling the FBI on social media.
Is there something going on that we don't know about? Actually, I can say with a high level of certainty that "no" there is not.
If you watch the news, you know the danger. Just this week, the Russians posted a map of how they would divide up America if they ever conquered us. The threats are always there.
Our advisories in the world all have prepared their citizens for what to do in a nuclear attack. The Chinese have built city-sized fallout shelters and constantly educate their people on what to do in the case of the unthinkable.
I am relieved that we are seeing more preparation and drills for the unthinkable in the United States. We need to be prepared just in case. Every family should have a plan and a basic understanding of what to do should IT happen.
Here are some steps every family should take:
1) Develop a plan with your family on what to do, where to go, and how to communicate.
2) Keep an emergency kit and some rations on hand. The kit should include food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours.
3) Identify a shelter space in your home that offers the most protection from a nuclear blast, such as a basement or interior room with no windows.
4) Pray. That is not in the official handbook, but it could never hurt.
In my opinion, Americans have to start coming together and stop fighting culture wars. We face challenges and threats. We cannot meet these challenges and manage these threats while having senseless arguments over things that really aren't that important in the overall scheme of things.
It never hurts to be prepared.
