Can You Legally Skip A Red Light In Texas By Using A Parking Lot?
We've all been angry at a red light in Texas right?
Sometimes, they're just so inconvenient aren't they? We've all got someplace to be, and when a red light appears before us, it's a little bit annoying to say the least. So while we wait, we try to find a way to get to our destination faster.
Texans will go a little bit over the speed limit to get somewhere quicker, or perhaps try to take another route with less traffic. It's a risk, but it does work most of the time. But there's one other thing somebody might do to avoid a dreaded red light.
A Texan may try to cut through a parking lot to get past a red light. But is that allowed by state law? The answer is simple.
Cutting A Red Light In Texas Via A Parking Lot? Better Not Do It!
As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, trying to outright evade a red light via a parking lot could cause you to face a misdemeanor charge. It's known as "rat-running" and it defies Texas Transportation Code 545.423. Drivers in the state could face financial penalties from $25 to $200, based on if they've been caught doing so before.
Now, there are of course exceptions to this rule. If one is trying to steer clear of an accident, or the situation is deemed an emergency, exemptions are given. But other than those two moments, it is illegal.
So, long story short? Might be best to just sit behind the red light in Texas.
