Winter is Coming to West Texas! How Cold Will it Get?
Even though winter is from December 21 to March 20th, Texas never really follows those guidelines. West Texas isn't known to have the coldest winters but we have had some doozies.
THE FREEZE OF 2021
According to the National Center for Environmental Information, a winter deep freeze took over all of Texas causing every county to be placed under a Winter Storm Warning. This happened from February 11-20, 2021, which made it the coldest winter storm since December 1989.
Sleet and freezing rain started falling in the Lone Star State on February 10th. The turning point happened on February 14th when the Arctic cold front crept in. The Great Freeze lasted almost 9 days and the last hard freeze warning expired on Saturday, February 20th. The freeze left over 10 million people without power.
WINTER IN TEXAS 2024-2025
According to Farmers Almanac, Texas is looking for a dry winter in the 24-25 season. The temperatures will be up and the snowfall will be low for the Lone Star State. La Niña will be the reason for the higher temps and lower perspiration in Texas. Texans within the "cold zone" in the panhandle will get their coldest temps in January and February 2025.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR WEST TEXAS?
Even though most of Texas is experiencing a moderate winter, far West Texas is slightly different. They predict the farther west you go, the weather will get cooler and wetter. It looks like the Permian basin will sit on the mild and dry side of that line.
Maybe a mild winter is just what we need this year. Considering my household was out of power for 5 days, I still feel victimized by the Great Freeze of 2021.
