Back to school in Midland-Odessa is either much anticipated or massively dreaded by local students.  With many students returning to school this week, one notable difference from previous years is the implementation of a new Texas law that bans the use of cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, and other personal devices throughout the school day.

House Bill 1481

Under House Bill 1481, students are prohibited by law from using personal devices during school hours. The primary rationale for this law is to reduce distractions in the classroom, allowing students to focus more on their education rather than what is on their phones.  According to the law, this applies not only in the classroom but also in hallways, during lunch hours, and at any other school functions that occur inside of regular school hours.  The law does state that an exception applies in case of a medical or emergency situation.

Feelings Divided About the Ban

The newly passed law is expected to benefit teachers immensely since cell phones have been a major distraction in classrooms for decades. However, some parents oppose the new law due to concerns about their inability to contact their children, a situation many parents are not used to.  Some school districts across Texas are suggesting locking phones away in what some call "phone pouches" to house the cell phone throughout the course of the school day.

Moving Forward

How this new law impacts both students and parents remains to be seen. Unfortunately, regardless of how people feel about it, this is still a Texas law. Adjusting to it will likely take some time, but it will resemble the past when cell phones were not as common as they are today. For those who remember attending school before cell phones became widespread, we managed just fine.
