El Paso Artists Step Into Each Other’s Shoes for the Return of “IMPOSTERS”
What happens when nearly 30 El Paso artists gather to create art as each other? Something revolutionary.
Last year, local artist and creative force JD Viz launched a bold experiment: an art show called IMPOSTERS. The concept was simple, but the impact was anything but. Artists of all disciplines, including painters, poets, musicians, photographers, and performers, were invited to abandon their own styles and instead imitate another artist’s voice, aesthetic, or practice. The result was a deeply personal and wildly creative exchange of identity, intention, and expression.
Now, IMPOSTERS is back.
This past weekend, artists met once again to draw names at random, selecting who they’ll become for the next month and who will become them. It’s not just a game. It’s a creative trust fall. And it’s already proving to be one of the most exciting and unconventional art collaborations El Paso has seen.
Among the group this year is yours truly, Grizz. I’m not only participating as an artist but also capturing the journey as the event’s official photographer. From the first anxious draws to the final performance, every strange and beautiful step of this artistic transformation will be documented.

JD Viz's Art Show "IMPOSTERS" Returns With Bold Concept
The strength of IMPOSTERS lies in its simplicity. Artists create as one another. What sounds like a fun challenge quickly becomes a deep dive into empathy, interpretation, and creative vulnerability. JD Viz has designed more than just a show. He has created a mirror maze where artists reflect each other’s work, revealing unexpected truths and building stronger artistic community ties in the process.
In a city known for its rich cultural fusion, IMPOSTERS offers something truly unique. It gives audiences a chance to witness local creatives push their own boundaries and celebrate each other’s artistry in the process.
El Paso Art Exhibit Set for July 5 at Bliss B Haven
The final event will take place on Friday, July 5 at Bliss B Haven, an intimate and energetic art space in Central El Paso. Guests can expect an unforgettable evening of boundary-pushing performances and exhibitions. Painting will meet poetry, music will blend with movement, and creativity will flow without limits.
Each piece will be presented as an imitation of another artist in the room. That means no one is presenting “their own” work, at least not in the traditional sense. It is a rare opportunity for audiences to see what one artist sees in another and how that vision gets translated into an entirely new medium or voice.
Whether you're part of the art community or simply a fan of bold ideas, IMPOSTERS promises to be one of the most memorable shows of the year.
