The US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Saturday that because of possible contamination with E. coli, a New Jersey company is recalling over 40,000 pounds of raw ground beef products.

Lakeside Refrigerated Services produced the products which were then shipped to retail locations nationwide. The recalled products were produced on June 1st.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration,  and abdominal cramps. Recovery time for most people is within a week. Some have been known to develop a type of kidney failure.

FSIS says that the possibility of E. coli was discovered during routine testing. So far, there are no confirmed reports of health issues due to consumption of these products.

The FSIS says that consumers should check for the recalled product in their refrigerator and freezer. If found, either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
