Shannon Medical Center Adding Cancer Center
Shannon Medical Center continues more upcoming expansions with plans for a $36 million dollar cancer center which should be completed within the next 18 months as a new addition to their downtown campus.
This undertaking is not just for a new Cancer Center. It also includes a new building for support services, another building for their Shannon Outpatient Pharmacy and also a parking garage all to be included in that $36 Million dollar price tag.
Construction is set to begin in August and the goal is to have the project completed by September of 2022.
The Shannon Cancer Center will be a two-story 51,000 square foot building. Here is how the two floors will be set up.
A news release stated that Radiation oncology will be on the first floor and include exam rooms and treatment space with two linear accelerator machines for radiation therapy. It will also feature a dedicated CT for radiation therapy treatment planning and capacity for expanded treatment modalities including High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy. The news release also stated that the first floor will include exam and treatment space for medical oncology. It will feature 28 chemotherapy and infusion chairs, doubling treatment capacity to serve more patients each day and will also include a dedicated pharmacy and lab for these patients.
The second floor will serve as space for patient education and support resources, like patient navigation and nutrition and genetic counseling. Offices for visiting oncology specialists with enhanced technology will be able to deliver virtual and telehealth services to support personalized oncology care.
Shane Plymell, President and CEO at Shannon, stated the new building will make treatment more convenient for cancer patients. Cancer cases continue to grow from Tom Green County and the surrounding region. We want patients to be able to receive the best care at home with their support system of family and friends. This new facility will allow us to recruit up to two more medical oncologists and another radiation oncologist as needed in the future, so care remains timely and efficient.”
The Center will also feature an outdoor garden space for patients to enjoy during treatment
Support services, including Shannon’s Human Resources department, will be housed in a second two-story building approximately 15,000 square feet and should be completed in August 2022.
The new 6,000 square-foot Shannon Pharmacy is expected to be completed by June 2022.
And finally, the project includes a five-story parking garage with about 300 spaces which should be complete by April 2022.
Shane Plymell also said “Most hospitals cannot do projects like this in our current healthcare economy,” stated Plymell in the news release. "We are fortunate to have the local support of the Shannon Trust, with their focus on providing the best facilities for our patients, so we can ensure we have the capacity to serve our community as it continues to grow in the future.”
The entire project with the four facilities should be completed by September of 2022.
