Street Maintenance Starts on Aug. 26th
The City of San Angelo will begin its annual program of street maintenance on Monday, Aug. 26.
Sealcoating of designated streets throughout the city is anticipated to be completed in two to three weeks. For a complete list of the streets, visit the City’s website at cosatx.us. The list is posted on the home page under the “Quick Links” heading and on the Engineering Services Division page (City Departments à Community & Economic Development à Engineering Services).
Sealcoating is a preventative measure that involves applying a thin layer of asphalt and rock to a street’s surface to prevent moisture from seeping into the asphalt and damaging the roadway’s base. The process extends the life of a street’s surface.
The City Council recently awarded a $1.7 million contract to Brannan Paving Co. of Victoria to perform the sealcoating. That represents a near-tripling of the $600,000 the City spent on sealcoating last year.
A $1.3 million project to mill and overlay four city streets is scheduled to begin the first week of September. That project, which will be performed by Reece Albert, a local contractor, is expected to take about a month to complete.
Mill and overlay involves grinding and removing the top 2 inches of asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt to improve and extend the life of the roadway’s surface; doing so also yields a smoother ride. After the milling, the affected streets will be reopened to traffic until the paving begins. Those streets are:
- Main Street from the Houston Harte Expressway to 18th Street.
- 14th Street from Main to Chadbourne streets.
- Oakes Street from 14th to 11th streets.
- 19th Street from U.S. Highway 87 west to the railroad tracks.
The streets involved in the maintenance program were determined following an analysis and prioritization of street conditions by the Engineering Services and Street & Bridge divisions with the assistance of a construction testing company that sampled and tested roadbeds.
