Veterans Are Changing through Therapy Horses
Many people know how horses have been used in therapeutic healing. One organization is focused on using horses to help bring relief to former soldiers plagued with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Saratoga WarHorse works with veterans struggling with fear, depression, and other mental issues after leaving the battlefield. Many veterans reject discussing or facing their issues publicly. When participants begin this program with the horses, it can have a very positive effect on the veteran.
One veteran told CBS6 News in Albany...'Whatever emotions I had, whatever I was feeling, at that time inside the ring, I was able to leave it there. I passed through the gate and I felt that I didn’t have to carry it anymore' .
Saratoga WarHorse uses retired racehorses to create a healing bond between equine and veteran. The silent understanding that is created can be life changing for those who feel like they are struggling to be understood.
Bob Nevins, founder of Saratoga WarHorse, says helping these vets connect with the horses and themselves is incredibly rewarding. 'The transformation takes place, and you realize you may have just saved someone’s life.'
You can see that incredible transformation in the above video.
It's nice to know that we have a great program that helps Vets and non-military individuals here in San Angelo. Sonrisas Trails Therapeutic Riding has helped many individuals through their programs for children, adults, and their Veterans program as well.
