35 Years Ago: ‘Roy Orbison Day’ in Odessa

Thirty-five years ago today, on July 19, 1981, 'Roy Orbison Day' was celebrated in Odessa. Orbison was given the keys to the city and he performed for the crowd gathered at the event.

Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas on April 23rd, 1936. He attended Odessa Junior College in the mid 1950's. Orbison formed the band 'The Teen Kings' while he was attending college in Odessa. On a road trip to Dallas, Orbison saw Elvis Presley for the first time and well, the rest is history.
