47 years ago on this date (February 24, 1969), Johnny Cash recorded an album at San Quentin State Prison. The album was released in June of that year and has since gone triple platinum. The record is perhaps best known for Cash's recording of 'A Boy Named Sue'.

The album would go on to be nominated for Album of the Year and took home the Best Male Country Vocal Performance for 'A Boy Named Sue'.

The recording is also famous for the iconic picture of Johnny giving the middle finger. In the liner notes for the album, Cash explains he flipped off the camera man because he was frustrated with the video crew for blocking the view of the audience.

The album finished the year as the top seller on both the country and pop charts for the year 1969.
