Just a short drive up the road, West Texas has an awesome Zoo in Abilene, but it has lost over $800,000 since the COVID-19 shutdown.

They closed the Zoo on March 17th and say they are finally ready to reopen at the end of May.

According to  Development Coordinator Stephanie Delagarza, “The loss included ticket sales, purchases from the gift shop and concession stands, the train rides, and the carousel rides."

A lot of the money lost is used to cover vet care, supplies, and food for the animals at the zoo."

March through August is the Zoo’s busiest time with people visit from all over Texas.

The zoo is preparing for re-opening on May 18th using CDC guidelines for social distancing.

Fortunately, the financial hit has not cost any jobs.

When it does re-open, it’s a short road trip worth taking to enjoy such a wonderful zoo.
