Lubbock Police: Car Was 105 Degrees When Officers Rescued Baby

Thirty-three-year-old Jesse Perez was arrested after police rescued his baby that was left inside his car on Friday, March 26th.

According to a police report obtained by KAMC News, two people arrived at the Target on University Avenue at around 4 p.m. They noticed a baby, completely drenched in sweat, screaming inside of the car next to them. The car was off and all of the windows were rolled up. They said that the baby appeared delirious, staring off into the distance at times. The witnesses say they tried to find something to break the car's windows, but failed to do so.

Lubbock police officers arrived at the scene soon after and broke one of the car's windows to rescue the baby, who was reportedly about to pass out.

After the child was rescued by the responding officers, the inside temperature of the vehicle was determined to be just over 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

KAMC News reports that Perez, who was later confirmed to be the child's parent, came out of the Target and told police he was only inside for around 15 minutes. However, he admitted he wasn't paying attention to the time. After checking the store's surveillance footage, it was clear Perez was actually shopping for nearly 30 minutes.

Perez was then arrested and taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center on a charge of Abandoning or Endangering a Child. He has since been released on bond.

The condition of the child left inside the hot vehicle wasn't released by the Lubbock Police Department.
