In life, there are 2 absolutes: dogs are awesome, and Texas is hot.

Dogs are going to always want to play, but it can be dangerous to them when temperatures reach a certain degree.

At just 77º outside means the temperature of asphalt is 125º. When something at that temperature touches skin, it can start destroying it within 1 minute.

Since San Angelo regularly hits triple digits, we need to make sure our pets are kept safe during these intense months.

Battersea, a UK based humane society released a list of things you can do to make your dog safer during the hot months.

  • Encourage them to stay in the shade, out of direct sunlight.
  • Put down damp towels for them to lay on.
  • Put the garden sprinkler on.
  • Keep a small pool out for them to splash in.
  • NEVER leave your dog in a car.
  • Always ensure you have a bottle of water and bowl for them if you go out.
  • Introduce new games which don’t involve too much running.
  • Plan walks to avoid the hottest time of day.
  • Check hot surfaces with your hands – if they are too hot for you they are likely too hot for your dog’s paws.
  • Remember regular grooming to keep your dog’s coat clean and free of knots.

Dogs and cats are like family. Keep them safe the same way you would a child.
