Back in March, Governor Abbott announced a waiver for licenses that needed to be renewed during the pandemic. This included driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, commercial learner permit, state ID or election identification certificates.

After they announced a grace period for expired licenses in 2020, we knew it would not last forever, well now we have a date for when forever ends.

The temporary waiver will expire on April 14, 2021. And In an effort to minimize traffic at local DPS offices, the state is encouraging drivers who are eligible to renew their license online at Texas.gov.

I think renewing now to get it over with is probably the smartest way to handle this.

All you'll need to renew is:

  • A valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express)
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Your current Texas driver license or ID card. If you do not have audit number, you will be required to complete additional authentication with an additional fee

If you must book an in person appointment, you can do that as well.

But if you cannot make it in during the week, Saturday appointments are only available through this Saturday, the 19th.
