Angelo State University’s Multicultural Advisory Council and the ASU Bookstore will host the Thirst Project Road Warriors for an expo and presentation on campus on Monday, Sept. 21.

Launched by seven college students in 2008, the Thirst Project’s mission is to raise awareness among high school and college students of the global water crisis. A Thirst Project Expo will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. The Road Warriors will make a presentation from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St. The first 20 attendees to the evening event will receive a reusable water bottle. There will also be a prize raffle.

According to the Thirst Project, more than 700 million people do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. Every 19 seconds, a child dies of water-related diseases such as cholera and dysentery. In addition, in the countries experiencing a water crisis, many women are unable to work and children are unable to attend school because they spend their days walking an average of nearly 4 miles to bring water home to their families.

The nonprofit Thirst Project has raised $8 million, 100 percent of which has gone toward building wells that have benefitted 280,000 people in 13 countries. The project has also recruited participation among more than 300,000 students on 320 U.S. campuses.
