San Angelo Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. San Angelo's Family Fiestas Patrias this weekend is a great part of celebrating.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
San Angelo does a great job of celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with Family Fiestas Patrias. Community, culture and fun is what the celebration is all about and it's going on this weekend. Today and tomorrow, Sept. 24th & 25th if you head to San Angelo’s cultural district in Historic Downtown San Angelo, you will experience an extravaganza of music, art, crafts, food and activity in and around the area of The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. Hours are Fri, Sept 24th from 4-8 pm and Sat, the 25th from 10 am – 10 pm. Most activities are free and families can enjoy art projects, dance demonstrations, clay making, food trucks, artists, vendors & lots of live music starting with a tribute to Selena and continued live music until 10 pm.
