In 2018 a story went viral of a Memphis teen who had to have her gallbladder removed after she ate four bags of spicy hot chips.  As the story was told a 17 year old named Rene Craighead began feeling sick to her stomach and was rushed to the hospital where doctors removed her gallbladder.

Since then, many swear that these spicy chips like Doritos Flamin Hot Cool Ranch chips, Takis Fuego and Flamin' Hot Dorito's cause gallbladder issues. This is despite the proliferation of new spicy hot chip flavors being introduced every year.

There is better than bad news and bad news concerning these chips according to medical authorities. The better than bad news according to the  The National Institutes of Health is that "While being overweight or having obesity may make you more likely to develop gallstones, especially if you are a woman. it is unlikely that the spiciness of a particular snack product single-handedly leads to gallbladder problems.

That doesn't mean you're totally out of the woods if you eat a lot of these spicy chips. According to a report by "Healthline" Dieticians warn that spicy pepper found in flaming hot chips can cause a number of complications if eaten in large quantities.  This is especially true in children. One possible health issue is acute gastritis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach which causes pain, nausea and vomiting.  The coloring of the chips can also cause a scary trip to the bathroom.

The dye can make your poo look blood red, which has caused many people to rush to the hospital thinking they are bleeding. Some studies also suggest that eating spicy foods may trigger symptoms like stomach pain for people with known stomach or colon issues like irritable bowel syndrome.

Studies have shown for years that regularly consuming highly processed foods, like hot chips, can lead to higher risks of heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. But most doctors agree:  they won't literally eat a hole in your stomach.
