Angelo State Wool Judging Team Wins National Championship
The Angelo State University Agriculture Department’s student Wool Judging Team claimed the 2017 Collegiate National Championship by placing first at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Collegiate Wool Judging Contest on March 20 in Houston.
ASU team members Morgan McCullough of Eden, Maggie Louton of Helotes, Lexi Carroll of Krum, Bailey Hooten of Wall, Ty Mitchell of Palmer, Tate Schwartz of Wall, Destiny Cowley of Floresville, and Mikhaila Barnett of Lometa took first place at the Houston contest over teams from Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, Colorado State University and South Dakota State University.
The ASU team also took first place at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo Contest in February and was named the 2017 Collegiate National Champion by virtue of winning two of the three contests that made up the 2017 judging season.
“This success is a testament to the students’ dedication and hard work that began when they started training back in September,” said Dr. Mike Salisbury, chair of the ASU Agriculture Department. “It is quite a feat for them to win against larger Division I schools, and it has been a long time since ASU won a championship in Houston. It just goes to show that if you work hard and keep going, you can accomplish your goals, and that is what our department is all about.”
Individually for ASU in Houston, McCullough won first place with 715 points, Louton placed third (705 points), Barnett took fifth place (703) and Carroll finished seventh (699).
In the individual categories, McCulloch (1st), Carroll (3rd), Mitchell (7th), Barnett (8th) and Louton (9th) all finished in the top 10 in Grading. McCulloch (3rd) and Louton (4th) placed in the top 10 in Placing & Reasons.
The ASU Wool Judging Team is coached by Dr. Will Dickison of the agriculture faculty and graduate students Tyler Davidson and Sterling Yurrita.
